What types of awnings are there? Which one is right for me?
The types of awnings vary depending on their usage. Systems with arms include the following:
Awnings with vertical rods (antirides): This is the old classic system with rods, commonly seen on older houses in Athens, where two or more vertical rods are attached to the balcony railings.
Loggia system: In this system, articulated arms are mounted at both ends. When the awning is closed, it folds neatly at the top of the balcony, offering a more aesthetic look compared to the vertical rods. This system allows easy adjustment of the awning’s slope via the arms. In recent years, motorization has become increasingly common, and combined with sun and wind automation, it provides protection against weather conditions.
Tension bar system with independent arms: This system allows the installation of two or more arms, enabling longer awning lengths. Motorization is more necessary due to the awning’s extended size.
Cassette system with articulated arms: Similar to the above, in this system all components of the awning — fabric and arms — close inside a protective cassette, safeguarding both the fabric and mechanical parts from weather conditions. There are many cassette shapes — oval, round, and square — depending on the architecture and the client’s preference. This system combines aesthetics, durability, and functionality.
All the above systems offer options for aluminum colors and fabric types, including acrylic, polyester, and perforated materials. These systems are usually installed on balcony ceilings and walls.
For windows, there are other types of awnings:
Capotine awning: Typically covers half of the window, allowing airflow while protecting from sunlight. The covering is usually made of canvas or waterproof fabric, protecting windows from rain during the winter months.
Vertical systems: Available in cassette or open versions, with side aluminum guides or cables, which move up and down depending on the sun’s position. Fabrics for this system are usually perforated, providing sun protection while maintaining visibility.
All systems must comply with CE specifications. The appropriate system is chosen based on the installation location and the budget the client wishes to allocate.
